THE BEEHIVE PANELS

Beehive panels are an art form unique to the Slovenian region and originate from a traditional bee keeper's craft and fact that bees sooner find their hive if it is painted. Instead of simply painting the front of the hives in one bright color, keepers started (in about 1700 AD) to add delicately crafted panels with imagery of good wishes, perky scenes, seasonal captures and religious icons.

The intention of the set was to create artificially aged panels - these are just the designs, to be placed upon aged wood - placed in representative conserving frames and offered as samples of Slovenian heritage.
